Diagnostic Evaluations & Identity Consultations
with Rachel Boggan, MSW, LCSW-S, ADHD-CCSP, CCTP
At the properties of light, we offer a collaborative, neurodiversity affirming process of diagnostic evaluation for autism and/or ADHD using a non-pathologizing, anti-oppressive framework.
We also offer a non-diagnostic process of self-exploration and resource mapping through identity consultation.
Our approach is healing-centered, gender inclusive, and rooted in the principles of the neurodiversity paradigm and the social model of disability.
Most importantly, our work is informed by autistic, adhd, & multiply neurodivergent people.
Call me radical, but I’m of the belief that evaluation should be a process of discovery, validation, and hope - not a process that is pathologizing, othering, or otherwise harmful to experience. Many of the screening and assessment tools that are commonly used by professionals of many disciplines are rooted in behaviorism, pathology, and ableist ideas about deficits, and do not provide opportunities to respectfully explore and affirm the internal experiences of neurodivergent people of all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and abilities.
My diagnostic evaluation process *centers* the experiences of autistic, adhd, and multiply neurodivergent people, NOT the view of autistic, adhd, and multiply neurodivergent people through a neuro-normative lens. It is the result of many years of education and training in autism, adhd, and mental health assessment, many years of critical questioning and (un)learning, a lifetime-in-progress of lived experiences, and the wisdom of countless lifetimes of experiences that have been generously shared with me along the way. It is a process of empowerment through collaborative discovery and meaning making.
In addition to diagnostic evaluation, I also offer identity consultations to share validation, feedback and a space to explore what folks already know about themselves, and provide an opportunity to ask questions, discover new connections, and unpack/reframe experiences through a lens of self-understanding and acceptance. Consultation sessions are a good fit for people who do not desire, do not need, or do not feel comfortable seeking “official” diagnosis, folks who already have diagnosis, and anyone who is seeking a space for validation, feedback, and exploration. Consultation sessions also offer a more cost-accessible way to collaboratively problem solve around support needs and potential resources for autistic and multiply neurodivergent people and/or their loved ones.
Autistic & ND Identity Consultations
The identity consultation process offers validation, feedback and a space to explore what folks already know about themselves, and provide an opportunity to ask questions, discover new connections, and unpack/reframe experiences through a lens of self-understanding and acceptance.
The purpose of autistic and neurodivergent identity consultation is NOT to determine whether or not you are autistic and/or ADHD according to diagnostic criteria...it is to explore self-diagnosis/identification and/or process previous diagnosis, and move forward from the question of "am I?" to explore the question of "so what does this mean for me?"
Consultation sessions are a good fit for people who do not desire, need, or feel comfortable seeking formal or “official” diagnosis, folks who already have diagnosis, and anyone who is seeking a space for validation, feedback, exploration, and resource mapping. It also may be a good fit for people who are questioning, and those who want to explore whether or not pursuing a diagnosis may be helpful or needed based on their unique situation and support needs, or those of their loved ones. It also may be helpful for folks who have had previous evaluation for themselves or for their child, and would like support in making sense of diagnosis and recommendations, and/or for folks looking for more cost-accessible ways to explore autistic + ND experiences and identify neuro-affirming resources and supports.
This process is client-led, which means that we will ask you to share your questions, thoughts, and goals for collaboration in order to focus our time together. Some common areas for exploration and consultation include sensory experience and needs, relationships, language and communication differences, interactions between autism/adhd and gender, parenting as an autistic/adhd/multiply neurodivergent person, PDA, disclosure and self-advocacy in professional and personal relationships, unlearning ableism and the social model of disability, and developing positive autistic/neurodivergent identity.
*These sessions are NOT clinical services, and there is no diagnosis provided. They are available for folks living anywhere and everywhere! For folks looking for formal diagnostic evaluation services, please join our evaluation waitlist.
I bring both learned and lived experience to consultation sessions, and work with autistic, ADHD, AuDHD and ND-questioning people of all ages, as well as for parents, carers, partners, and other loved ones.
Autistic + Neurodivergent Identity Consultation Sessions include:
90 minute session (virtual - in-person in Richmond, VA available on request)
Resource guide/recommendations list developed based on session, sent 1-2 weeks following session
Diagnostic Autism & ADHD Evaluation
DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION is for people seeking what is known as “official diagnosis,” “medical diagnosis,” or “formal diagnosis” - it is a collaborative process which includes gathering of social and developmental history, diagnostic interview sessions(s), self-report measures/questionnaires, a written report and meeting to review report and evaluation outcomes.
This is the diagnostic process of determining whether a person meets clinical diagnostic criteria for a diagnosis of autism and/or adhd, and includes a full evaluation report with evaluation outcomes and diagnosis of autism and/or adhd if indicated, as well as recommendations.
I’m passionate about helping people of all ages and identities develop positive neurodivergent identity through assessment and education, as well as joining adults on a path of self-discovery and reinterpretation of life experiences through understanding of trauma and neurodivergent experience in a neurotypical world.
In particular, my focus is in providing services that are inclusive of intersectional identities of gender, race, ethnicity, and disability, as well as “giftedness”/2e folks, and folks with history of trauma, and/or co-occurring mental illness. This is because for many of these folks, a lack of comprehensive training for licensed professionals about characteristics of Autism and ADHD, particularly as experienced by People of Global Majority (PGM)/Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and Women, Girls, Queer, Transgender, Non-binary and Gender Non-Conforming folks, can lead to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis.
This means that at The Properties of Light, we may utilize different tools for assessing and evaluating Autism and/or ADHD than other providers. There are no specific, definitive psychological tests that are required to identify/diagnose Autism or ADHD. My process of evaluation utilizes assessment tools that are intentionally selected for their neurodiversity affirming, non-pathologizing approach to understanding, assessing and describing Autism and ADHD, and are within my scope of practice as a licensed clinical provider.
I also offer training and employment opportunities for qualified, licensed clinical providers who are value aligned, and prioritize listening to lived experiences. The goal of increasing accessibility of affirming assessment services for communities is something that guides the work of my practice - with the understanding that accessibility to an affirming assessment is about more than cost alone. One of the ways that I work toward this goal is offering training, employment, and consultation opportunities with priority given to autistic and/or multiply neurodivergent clinicians, as well as those of all neurotypes who experience systemic barriers in the helping professions including BIPOC/PGM, LGBTQIA+, and/or disabled clinicians.
Do we accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance. Providing services via self pay allows us to utilize our equitable price model and create greater accessibility to services for folks with less discretionary wealth and/or access to financial resources, while balancing sustainability for each provider based on their unique access/care needs. These are important values in my work, and my recommended sustainable rate is lower than general market rate as part of my personal commitment to equity, interdependence, and community wealth.
Using private pay services also allows clients to have more autonomy over how, when, and with whom their information is shared, and under what circumstances. For many people who have experienced harm from systems that were supposed to help, as well as people who are vulnerable to systematic discrimination, having this autonomy can be critical to their safety and well-being.

Cost of Evaluation
Diagnostic evaluation is a significant investment of your time, energy, and financial resources. I know how financially inaccessible diagnostic assessment can be, and I do my best to minimize operations costs in order to keep rates as low as possible. Because transparency is important for accountability, here is the breakdown of the cost for diagnostic assessment:
The total time that clients can expect to invest in the assessment process is 3-5 hours with the evaluator(clinical interview and feedback sessions), and 2-4 hours completing questionnaires and assessment measures (completed remotely, at client’s pace and convenience).
The total time evaluators spend on each evaluation is approximately 8-10 hours (up to 10-12 hours for combined evaluation)
2-3 hours of diagnostic interview session(s) with client and collateral interviews (3-4 hours for combined evaluation)
2 hours of evaluator time in analyzing & organizing information gathered
2-3 hours of evaluator time writing diagnostic report & recommendations (3-4 hours for combined evaluation)
45-60 minute session with client(s) to review evaluation outcomes and recommendations
